6th Class News

6th class had a very busy couple of weeks getting ready to leave primary school. They had a great day at the Garda Sports Day in Slashers, where they took part in lots of fun events. That same day they played the annual basketball game against the teachers. For only the third time in fifteen years 6th class beat the teachers, with Callum McCormack’s winning basket bringing the final score to 12-10. Well done to all the girls and boys who took part.

Sporting News

As always we had a very busy year with sport in our school. The following are some of the children’s sporting achievements throughout the year:

  • The girls were runners-up in the County Longford Primary Schools Plate basketball final 2016.
  • The boys were also runners-up in the County Longford Primary Schools Cup basketball final 2016.
  • We also took part in the Mixed Hurling Championships (in which we got to the finals) and the FAI 5 a-side Schools’ Soccer.
  • We are very proud to call ourselves the Division 2A Gaelic Football Champions of 2016! We were serious underdogs going into this final, with St. Michael’s having beaten us significantly in the round stages in March. We came from a point behind at half time to win the match by four points. This was a huge team effort with a huge team attitude. Well done to the boys. You did yourselves, your families and your school proud.

Finally, a huge thank you to Master Leen for all his hard work with all of the sporting events this year.

Proclamation/Grandparents’ Day

On Tuesday 15th March we celebrated Proclamation Day. Our national flag was raised by principal Meriel McCord. The 1916 Proclamation was read by Fr. Michael McGrath, Mrs Mulligan, Mary Conlon and 6th class pupil Oisin Killane. The Proclamation for a New Generation was read by 6th class pupil Aiden Connell. We were delighted to have so many friends with us on the day, one of whom was Stonepark’s former principal Anthony Casey. Master Casey was presented with a photograph, which was taken on the day he raised our national flag fifty years ago.

1916 Dublin Tour

On Wednesday, 9th March, the children from 6th class went on a 1916 tour of Dublin. They visited Collin’s Barracks, O’ Connell St., the GPO, Moore St., The Garden of Remembrance and the Hugh Lane Art Gallery.. Their tour guide for the day was Mr. Brennan and the children were accompanied by Ms. Mulvihill and Mrs. Mulligan. It was a brilliant opportunity for the children to visit places of such historic importance and gain valuable information in this, the centenary year of The 1916 Rising.
